Historic Houses and Gardens
by Joanna Bradley

Hampshire has a long list of historic buildings and beautiful gardens. Each contains its own peice of history and will enable you to step back in time.

Jane Austens House museum is situated in Chawton, near Alton. It's a delightful 17th century house located not far from her birthplace of Steventon. She lived here from 1809 - 1817 and it was from here that she had the most productive part of her life, revising or writing most of her works. The museum contains items belonging to Jane, including her writing desk and other personal items and the gardens still have many 18th century plants and is a peaceful spot.

Mottisfont Abbey built on the River Test in the 12th century is now cared for by the National Trust. An impressive building, this once Augustinian Priory is surrounded by beautiful gardens with extensive lawns, a lavendar filled walled garden and a splendid rose garden. So both house and grounds are enjoyable to walk around.

Houghton Lodge Garden and Hydroponicum, near Stockbridge, is a bit of a suprise. Built in the 18th century when some were desiring to escape from the grander houses, this cottage is a splendid example of the architecture of its time. The gardens were laid at a time when there was movement away from the formal layout to the more natural landscape look and these gardens are a glorious example of this. The hydroponicum garden is an interesting centre showing the benefits of hydroponic gardening and blends past with future. The grounds are extensive here and should definately be on your list of visits.

So if historic buildings and gardens are your type of day out, Hampshire certainly has plenty of day trips waiting for you.
