Weymouth and Portland
by Joanna Bradley

Picture days gone by and a classic English seaside town and Weymouth offers you it all. The Georgian seafront looks over the sandy beach and hustle and bustle of seaside life. Donkey rides, Punch and Judy shows, beach sports for teenagers and plenty of room just to relax and watch the world go by, there is a comforting and familiar feel about what you get here.

But there's also more to explore. A beautiful coastline with many coves, it's part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and you don't have to be a geologist to appreciate it! The local tourist information and visitor centres have plenty of leaflets and such that will help you take a walk through time in these parts. You might even find a fossil or two yourself!

The Isle of Portland offers safe waters and centres for water sports. Windsurfing and kite surfing being just two on offer! Portland Castle once a stronghold for Henry VIII overlooks the harbour and a tour will give you an insight into its fascinating history. Of course, you wouldn't want to miss out on a visit to Portland Bill lighthouse and a look at the dramatic Pulpit Rock.

Walkers have plenty of impressive countryside to amble through. The south west coast path is a popular trail to follow but find time to stop and have a Dorset cream tea at one of the many quaint villages you pass through!

There really is something here for all in the family, so next time you see it's a sunny summer day, why not head down to this little peice of Dorset.....
