Hay On Wye is appropriately called the town of books. This market town set on the southern side of the River Wye, is home to countless book stores to be explored. The range of new and second hand stock to be found is endless. With a fine collection of first editions and rare books too, if there is something you are looking for, this is a good place to start looking! Even if not particularly in pursuit of a book, its enjoyable just to browse through some of the old stores with old books, almost a journey through history as the atmosphere of libraries of old permeates the shop.
This year the Festival of Literature will be held here from May 26th to June 4th 2006 and many renowned faces in literature, music and art will be making an appearance.
Every Thursday the market stalls move in! and this little town becomes a hive of activity. Fresh foods, preserves and other local produce make this worth perusing. The town is also host to a variety of galleries, crafts and many cafes and restaurants to welcome the visitor.
But there is more to this town than just books. Set in beautiful scenery at the northern part of the Brecon Beacons National Park there are many walks to enjoy this peaceful countryside. The tourist information board in the town will have details of these and other activities such as canoeing and pony trekking available in the area.
So if you are a book lover and fancy a trip to a peaceful market town, surrounded by unspoilt scenery, this is certainly the place for you.
